Switch ON to Music

Switch ON to Music visits special schools across Scotland to give children with physical disabilities and learning difficulties the opportunity to learn to play, compose and perform music, many for the first time.
As well as enabling pupils to be successful musicians and performers, this experience also builds confidence and self-esteem and participants also develop their communication, concentration and coordination skills.

Switch ON also trains teachers to enable the schools to continue to run music activities for their pupils once projects end and ongoing support is provided.

Over the past year, we have worked in 12 different schools in six local authorities including Clackmannanshire, Dumfries & Galloway, Falkirk, Glasgow, East Ayrshire and South Lanarkshire.

“The project leader, Miriam Walker, has a professional qualification in music and autism and is a skilled performer in voice and French horn. She is gifted in communication skills, was very much ‘in tune’ with the needs, ability and potential of each individual child and patiently encouraged each child to engage, participate and therefore enjoy the lesson. These skills were fundamental to the overall success of the project.”

“The whole class thoroughly enjoyed the variety of equipment, switches etc. and quickly caught on to the fact that they were controlling the sounds. My class were highly motivated… sharing, turn-taking, waiting, experimenting with sounds and rhythm, switches and recordings of their own sounds produced an atmosphere which they really responded to.”
